Most people will agree that the last 8 years were bad. George W Bush will go down in history as one of the worst Presidents the US has ever had. To most foreigners and many Americans Bush’s war on Iraq was illegal and utterly irresponsible. Already the Russians are mumbling about the US precedent in Iraq when defending their actions in Georgia.

In his own country the dishonesty of the war was a big deal, but I expect the allowance of wanton “looting” of the US and other economies by the Ken Lays of this world, contributing heavily to the downturn in the global economy, is what Dubya will be known for.

The rich have always and will always get richer, but in the last 8 years this happened illegally and without moral. To the USA’s unexpected credit I think the average guy has had enough of this. They see Obama as a guy with his priorities right. One thing is for sure; he is in no-ones pocket….yet.

Now for my selfish reasons. I think Obama will have more clout with Africans. I think if Obama stands up and tells Kenya that its systemic corruption is not acceptable Kenyans will react.

I think that if Obama stands up and tells the ANC that affirmative action (in all its forms) is a racist discriminatory attack on a minority then they will listen without immediately condemning it as “racist propaganda” by a white man.

Another selfish reason I like Obama is because he is a secularist. I was deeply concerned about the influence that the church and fundamentalism played in the decisions of George W Bush and Tony Blair. As far as I can tell Obama won’t let that happen. Some people are even saying that he may not be religious at all.

The final selfish reason is that Obama is more inclined to consider the environment in his decision making processes than any big-business funded Republican.
