iPhone kom Suid Afrika toe
Boesmans sunrise/sunset & more
I have just updated the Bushman’s River Mouth homepage to show a 3-day weather forecast. This data is ‘live’ and pulled via an RSS (Real Simple Syndication) feed from BBC. Sofar the forecasts have been very accurate. I’m still trying to get an RSS feed of the tides, but sofar the closest match is for Durban. But I will keep on looking.
So please check out the Boesmansriviermond weather. This weather obviously applies to the surround (Kenton-on-Sea, Boknes & Cannon Rocks) as well.
Brand new Mercedes C Class: a beauty!
We just saw the brand new Mercedes C Class outside our shop. It is so new it has not even been priced yet in this country nevermind released. I must say it is a beautiful car! I’ve always been a fan of Mercedes since my dad had the W126 (the best selling shape Merc has ever had) 260E. But in my opinion Mercedes-Benz have lost ground to BMW and Audi in terms of design over the last decade or so. I can gladly say though that this model makes up for that.
People coming in and out of our shop all noticed the car – I wonder how many coffees we need to sell for me to be able to afford one?
Digital cameras to benefit from new colour-filter
Kodak has anounced a new colour filter that is supposed to be twice as sensitive to light. This means is that you will be able to take great photos in even darker conditions than you can presently. You can go pretty dark as itáis, butátypically you need to either keep the shutter open for longer (forcing you to use a tripod) or you need to up the ISO making photo grainy.
It is set to start appearing in some camerasáas soon asá2008. I’m not sure how it will be incorporated into other brands like Nikon (which I use).
Read more at CNN’s New filter promises crisper photos.
Online at Last
I am finally back online with an acceptable (albeit expensive) connection. I did manage to send a few emails and to update my blog once, but all of that was done through my parents’ 56K modem with the good ol’e tone and all!
ADSL in SA is insanely expensive. Our 1MB that is capped at 3GB/month works us out at around about R800/month. That equates to about ú60/month in the UK. In the UK you can get 10MB uncapped Internet at around about ú15/month. As most other things in SA is much cheaper than in the UK we should be paying much less for Internet, but at least we have now got something. All we need now is some free market forces to be allowed to do their thing.
Nikkor 18-200mm VR… finally!
I was very lucky to have purchased a highly rated Nikkor 18-200 VR lens today. I have been looking for this lens since November 2005 but they are almost impossible to get. Thanks to the outstanding efforts of Tina Aarsen of Fixation that changed today.
I can’t wait to test it out so I’m hoping for some good weather this weekend.
Thanks a million Tina!!
The old Steve Jobs: a bright star indeed
Whilst reading up on Steve Wozniak, I came across some true Apple gems. Check out these video clips of Steve Jobs in his absolute element here. Look out for Bill Gates as well.
My Frappr page
I don’t really get Frappr yet, but here is my Frappr page anyway.
Please join (I think?) if you want to.
The best personalised homepage on the ‘net?
I heard about ProtoPage from TWiT, my favourite techie podcast, and decided to have a look.
I must say I was very impressed. It almost exclusively uses AJAX and is therefore very slick. Google do something similar, but Protopage is miles ahead (for now).
You can setup pages to be private or public for instance. Check out my public home page at Attie’s Home.
I love reading blogs, but you have to admit that they are hard to keep track of. I know RSS readers do it for you, but as a consultant I work from many PCs so that doesn’t really work for me. This page takes care of that for me.
I am well impressed, but do check it out for yourselves at protopage.com.
My home town (on Google Earth)
Thanks to Google Earth I can show you where I grew up and my parents still live. Click on the image and it will open the full sized version. You’ll see two rivers in the centre of the picture. Bushman’s River Mouth is the village to the left (West) of the Bushman’s River (the more Western river). The more Eastern river is the Kariega. The village in-between is Kenton-on-Sea.
